Religion played a large role during all of the nine crusades. According to the people the crusades we known as "God's Will." Almost all of the crusades started out to reach the Holy Land, but ended with politics and warfare failure. Popes started crusades if the Catholic Church was threatened in any way, even if they weren't positive it was a threat.
